Nietzsche

I understand Nietzsche’s philosophy, but I do not agree with everything that he says. He states that moral values were invented by the weak to protect the weak. By having this set of values an individual is given the opportunity to blame someone else for his action or given the opportunity to excuse his action. What this means is that the person is being allowed to separate his or herself from what he actually does. This is a silly way to view things since we can't say that our actions don't determine who we are as a person when action are exactly what determines who we are.

I also understand that we cannot just allow the strong to take advantage of the weak simple because they are strong; so the question is, should we use moral values as a way to protect the weak, or should we allow the strong to show their strength with strength instead of weakness?

  1. I mean I, of course, would say that moral values should be a way to help the weak, but then again I am the weak. However, i don't think that myself being "weak" makes my life any less important than those that are the "strong." It makes sense that if this more was like "survival of the fittest" only the strongest traits would survive, however it's, in my opinion, thoughts like this that lead to corruption, and even genocide. Its like with a spider and a fly. To a fly, being trapped in a web seems like utter chaos, but to a spider the web is normal. The fly is still just as necessary as the spider, if not more, because without the fly the spider could not survive. It is the same for the strong and weak, without the weak the strong couldn't determine their strength. Also, their can be no development as a whole if everyone is worried about their own strength. For example, technology helps those who have a weakness and helps them to become more equal to those how are strong. Yet, if everyone was strong their would be no reason to develop technology more, except to make the stronger even stronger.

  2. I believe we should use the moral values that are put in place by the stronger minded people in society. They have already established the goals and expectations of what others in society should aspire to be. They have also put in place what is morally right and morally wrong. Yes of course, the weaker population would not have a say-so in what goes on, but they could learn the qualities and characteristics of the stronger people, so that they will aspire to be like them once they understand what it takes to become a strong minded individual in society. The weak would include, children, geriatrics, and people cannot make decision for themselves. If the stronger people would take initiative and help the weak people, then they would eventually create a stronger society by continuing the tradition of helping people become stronger in society.

  3. I do not think Neitzsche's classification of the weak and strong is completely accurate by today's standards. He classifies religous figures and followers as being weak, when in reality the Pope, the Dalai Lama, and Mother Teresa are some of the most respected, strong, and influential people in society. It also takes a great amount of strength to strictly follow the beliefs of a religion and obstain from the temptations that the physical world offer, as wells as the strength it takes to beleive in a non-physical, higher power. I think a better definition of the weak is sick, mentally ill, young, old, and in a physical state that disables them from contributing and maintaining the status quo of society. Though Neitzsche's definition is a little off in my opinion, I believe that the strong should be a the forefront of society leading the lesser, protecting the lesser, and making advancements in all aspects of society.

  5. I believe that Nietzsche's theory of the weak using morals to protect themselves from the strong isn't that accurate. I can see why anyone would believe that, morals could be used as a checks and balance between the different society ranks; however, I believe that society uses morals to justify what their actions express. Everyone has different morals and some in common, people who are strong according to the Nietzsche don't used their entire power so to speak against the weak because they are bound by morals. What if it was a natural instinct to be bound by society morals for the strong not to use their strength or show it. It would create a sense of equality through society, knowing that the weak still exist. the weak themselves over populate the strong, so wouldn't the weak be consider the strong and the strong the weak, since strength can sometimes be seen in the numbers?
