Aristotle (to do good is to be good)

According to Aristotle, as much as you have the habit do to good things, your result would be to become a better person. He calls it phronesis - Practical Wisdom. He also mention that there are conditions to develop your virtue, but some people never had the opportunity to learn to develop those "skills". Based on that, he says that we learn learn from other people how to be a good person. From those two Aristotle's analysis (practicing to become a good person, and learn from others to become good) which one you think is the most important and most effective in our life? Aristotle put them together, which makes a lot of sense and help us to understand our ways to act in life. However, in my opinion, learn from others is the most important one for us. Imagine when you were a child and how many things you learned by just watching your parents action. If you can, please share your ideas as well.

  1. Diego, I agree with your inquiries and I believe your assumptions on Aristotle were spot on. To do good is to be good. The best way to become a good person is taking after others; for example, as you stated about imitating your parents when you were a child. But if you're good you'll do good, which basically means that if you're doing virtuous things, you know what virtue is. If you're not doing good things you do not know what virtue is. You talked about how people never had the opportunity to develop those virtuous traits and i agree that with Aristotle that we learn from other people. If you want to learn from others who do good, for you to do good, I believe that is very possible. Furthermore, to be virtuous character that comes through good habits and good actions. You can't claim to be virtuous if you haven't demonstrated it, claims Aristotle. In closing, Diego you made some very strong points and I think practicing good habits, learning from others, and creating good habits is a good way to become virtuous.

  2. You make an excellent point about Aristotle's view and I totally agree with you. In order to be good, we must do good actions. We must learn from others to gain at least the concept of what is a good deed. Just like how we were kids, our parents taught us what is good and what is bad. We learned from them and then later we matured and start doing our own good actions. Like what Aristotle said, We must practice this skill through having good habits and good actions. Also, we cannot be called virtuous if we don't show it. Overall you hit on all Aristotle's points, that by learning and doing good deeds, we can become virtuous people in this world.
