Frantz Fanon

Today in class we talked about Frantz Fanon and the chapter "The Fact of Blackness" in his book "Black Skin White Mask." The main point Fanon makes is that black and white people do not live the same lives. Back then when black people were considered objects as if being black was the only thing they could be. This objectification and alienation of black people was just how things were, but Fanon did not approve. Ignorance of this sort sadly still exists in our society today, but how we react to these situation are important as well. How should we react to the someone who tries to degrade us with their words? Should we react at all?

  1. I think that if you are a person who often feels objectified and alienated, you should speak up. I can see how always defending yourself may get tiring, but allowing a person to feel as if they are superior to you simply because they think of you as an object allows this ignorance to continue. Also, if you are a person who isn't often objectified or alienated, stand up when you see someone being disrespected.

  2. In today's society, there are many people who still have the same mind set 40 years ago. It's really sad to see that people treat others with no respect. We shouldn't in my opinion, react to stupidity with violence, it's not worth it. I would say kill them with kindness, sometimes saying nothing is all you need to shut someone up. Especially someone who is obviously ignorant.

  3. Well, speaking usually helps, facing them head on telling them that it is degrading and horrible what they are doing, or you can try ignoring them, the words may have strong intentions but that is all they are is words. In the world we live in it is common to see people name call and bully one another, either out of lack of respect or just hatred for one another. The only problem with worlds that might hurt someone is that they are words they can not come in the middle of the night and try to harm you they are only words and should be treated as such.

  4. I agree with Jahleel, I feel like you could kill them with kindness and show them that you will not fall to their level of ignorance. I also agree with Lydonia when she stated that we should stand up for those who are being objectified because that could make the victim feel as if someone is on their side or have once faced the same issues.
